Ghox (ゴークス) is a paddle developed by Toaplan and published by Taito in 1991 for arcades.
Story[]
Under the spell of the evil Magician Jagula, who plots to conquer the world, Lucia, the goddess of light, is confined by the Gates of the Netherworld. A dark age is ushered in and evil spirits from mountains and rivers roam throughout the world.
Deeply affected by the horror of the world, King Gitane of the Akuria Empire summons two burly and brave men from the Eastern Country and orders them to subdue Jagula. These two heroes journey through the evil spirits' lair which is cut off from the exclusive pious area. Freely manipulating their magic balls, Axis and Bilious plunge into action.
Gameplay[]
Ghox is a top-down ball and paddle game similar to Arkanoid. The player controls a paddle at the bottom of the screen which can be steered horizontally, and must bounce off a ball in order to destroy all bricks on the screen. Aside from the bricks, the arenas also feature door which must be smashed in order to reach the bricks behind them, wandering enemies and treasure chests which contain various power-ups for the player to collect. Some of those include a duplicator, which allows the player to launch two balls at once, and a smart bomb which clears all bricks within its blast radius.
