Rally Bike, known as Dash Rascal (ダッシュ野郎) in Japan, is an arcade racing game released in 1988. It was developed by Toaplan and distributed by Taito. Romstar would also license this game for US distribution.
Rally Bike was ported and released for the Family Computer and the NES in 1990 and the Sharp X68000 in 1991. A Mega Drive version was also planned for release, but was cancelled.
Gameplay[]
The player controls an motorcycle with an eight-way lever and two buttons (gas pedal and brake). The game is over if the player fails to exceed the qualifying rank for each stage at the finish line, or if the motorcycle runs out of fuel and stops (the motorcycle gradually slows down when it runs out of fuel, but the goal can be reached in the meantime). There are eight stages in total, including the six main stages and two bonus games.
The fuel tank is full at the start of the game, being consumed automatically while driving. The player can refuel by coming into contact with gas stations and items along the way. However, if you enter a gas station, you will lose your ranking.
Items are dropped onto the course from the sky by a helicopter during the race:
- Gas (GAS): Gives you a little extra fuel.
- Turbo (TURBO): Increases the maximum speed (2 levels). In some stages, you need to get this early in the race and have no accidents to be in first place.
- Helper (HELPER): Two motorcycles are mounted on either side of your motorcycle. Contact from both sides can destroy other vehicles.
- Bonus (1000 POINT): Increase your score by 1000 points.
Bonus Game[]
A race with a time limit of 60 seconds. An helicopter is always on the course, dropping items and medals one after another. The race ends when the helicopter runs out of fuel (even if the time is up, the helicopter will be forced to run out of fuel) or crashes, and bonus points are awarded to advance to the next stage.
Bonus points are determined by the distance traveled and the number of medals picked up. For each medal picked up, the player receives a medal bonus of "(2 + the number of times the car has won) x 50" and a driving bonus of up to 9000 points depending on the distance traveled.
In addition, the bonus game itself has overtaking points (each time you overtake an enemy, your score goes up).
